The screen resolution (iphone's 320 x 480 vs N97's 640 x 360)
On a much bigger, chunkier phone, but with no multi-touch, and you need a stylus to get anything done, on an OS that isn't designed for touch. Hmm?
(iphone's 2mp camera, vs 5mp camera with carl zeiss optics, flash, and dvd quality video)
Read the thread title- 3GS vs. N97 = 3.2mp with autofocus and autoexposure/white-balance. Check Flikr and you'll see which camera people prefer to use....if I want a portable phone/camera, I wouldn't get an N97- I'd get an SE model, for good reason- they actually take good photos and don't pretend.
N97 has similar GPS capabilities without having to pay large amounts for voice-guided navigation
Any voice-guided map software costs $100/year from Nokia- I've had Nokias before, and it isn't free at all. Not that you can easily buy navigation software on the Ovi store if you wanted to (does that place even have apps on it yet?)...
N97 has full stereo bluetooth, which not even the 3GS has.
iPhone 3GS has 2.1 ADP stereo, whilst the N97 only has 2.0...yes?
N97 has memory card functionality
Yes, I like to carry memory cards around with me too.
It isn't dated when compared to the iPhone, quite the opposite really.
Then explain it's extremely underpowered CPU, lack of RAM, and no decent GFX chip...? Or explain the pathetically archaic S60 platform it has slapped poor touch function on top of?
If the cost of the iPhone was rated based on hardware alone, the cost of the iphone would be much less than the N97. MUCH less.
See CPU/RAM/GFX/Compass for reference. And you aren't buying on hardware alone- when has hardware alone ever dictated a SMART purchase? If I'm going to use my phone every single day for hours on end, I want it to be functional, easy to use, and powerful. S60 and N97 don't offer this.
Sorry, but I don't want a dated phone. If the OP uses both in whatever shop they visit, side by side, they will quickly see the difference:
The 3GS is much, much, much faster, and syncs up with iTunes for music, movies, and apps. iTunes actually HAS apps on it- heaps! The 3GS can play great games, and has functional 3rd party apps to find you answers you need wherever you are, waste time, easily upload photos or videos to any social networking site, etc. EASY to use multitouch, and a decent non-90s OS. I could never go back from the iPhone OS platform to the lessers (S60, WinMO, SE's s60 stuff)...yuck!
